Who We Are
The Food Recovery Network Chapter (FRN) is a national organization that aims to reduce food waste, build a more sustainable planet, and ensure all people have access to food. FRN is the largest student-led network in combatting food insecurity in America, with hundreds of chapters implemented among university campuses. The Cal Poly San Luis Obispo chapter was founded in May of 2022 and works with local organizations to redistribute food waste to those who suffer from food insecurity. We strive to ensure Cal Poly students have access to healthy, affordable food, and limit food waste on our campus.
What Is Food Insecurity?
The United States Department of Agriculture defines food insecurity as a lack of consistent access to enough food for every person in a household to live an active, healthy life. Many of the causes of food insecurity are complex, stemming from economic, social, and psychological factors. Unfortunately, marginalized communities are often more greatly affected by food insecurity due to lower incomes, housing uncertainty, health conditions, and systemic discriminatory practices. Food insecurity can compound these issues leading to increased health issues, developmental problems for children, and insufficient funds for other basic necessities such as rent (Feeding America).

What is Food Recovery?
Food recovery is collecting safe, quality surplus food that would otherwise go to waste, and redistributing it to susceptible non-profit organizations.
